Stay Safe from Scams This Winter
Practical tips for older adults, carers, and neighbours
Scammers are getting smarter—but so are we. Whether it’s a suspicious phone call, a fake email, or someone knocking at the door, knowing what to watch for can help protect your money, your confidence, and your peace of mind.
Common Scams to Watch Out For
- Doorstep scams: Rogue traders offering fake repairs or selling overpriced goods. Tip: Display a “No Cold Callers” sign and never feel pressured to decide on the spot.
- Phone scams: Callers pretending to be from your bank, HMRC, or even a family member in trouble. Tip: Hang up and call the real organisation using a trusted number.
- Email and text scams: Messages that look official but ask you to click links or share personal info. Tip: Never click unexpected links. Check the sender’s address carefully.
- Relationship scams: Online “friends” who ask for money or gifts. Tip: Be cautious with new contacts who seem too good to be true.
What Helps

- Join a Neighbourhood Watch or local safety group.
- Talk openly with family or carers about anything suspicious.
- Report scams to Action Fraud: 0300 123 2040 or www.actionfraud.police.uk
